Había en la Ciudad de México un club de ajedrez muy singular. Lo administraba un cierto peluquero, don Mariano Eguiluz, que cedió una habitación al lado de su barbería para que en él se reunieran los ajedrecistas a librar sus enconadas guerras. Magníficos jugadores había en ese club. José Martí, el prócer cubano que por entonces vivía en México y que poseía técnica de campeón, pidió medirse con alguno de ellos. Eguiluz lo citó para esa misma tarde, y le dijo que le tendría preparado un gallo.
Puntual llegó Martí.
-¿Dónde está el gallo? -preguntó a Eguiluz, alegre y fanfarrón.
-Tendrá usted que disculparme, don José –le respondió el barbero–. No le tengo un gallo. Le tengo un pollito.
Con gran sorpresa se enteró Martí de que su rival era un niño de siete años. Lo vio, sonrió bonachonamente y se sentó frente al chiquillo. Con mucha solemnidad le estrechó la mano y le dijo que le cedía las bancas, y con ellas el derecho a hacer el primer movimiento. El chamaco agradeció la deferencia con la misma seriedad y empezó a jugar.
Bien pronto el gesto ligero de Martí se cambió por uno de curiosidad y luego por otro de franca preocupación. Curiosidad primero porque vio que el muchachillo planteaba el gambito de Damiano, que sólo un buen jugador podía conocer y ejercitar. Preocupación después porque advirtió que a la mitad del juego el niño tenía en el tablero una posición mejor que la de él.
No alarguemos la historia, ni alarguemos tampoco la agonía del gran poeta y patriota cubano. En la jugada 47 el chiquillo le dio mate. La concurrencia tributó al pequeño una gran ovación. El más entusiasmado aplaudidor fue José Martí.
¿A qué viene esta historia ajedrecística? Resulta que aquel niño era un coahuilense. Se llamaba Andrés Ludovico Viesca, y había nacido en Parras el 8 de abril de 1869. Don Andrés Clemente Vázquez, gran teórico del juego, a la sazón campeón nacional de ajedrez, lo calificó de prodigio. “... Jugamos con él una partida –escribió–, sin dar ventaja alguna a nuestro pequeño contrincante. Perdió el infantil Aquiles, pero se defendió de una manera admirable por más de 40 jugadas. Posteriormente lo vi jugar dos partidas simultáneas en casa de don Nicolás Domínguez, y venció a los dos ilustrados aficionados que se le enfrentaron. Las partidas, aunque interesantes, no fueron suficientes para que en ellas se mostrara el genio del pequeño adalid...”.
“De tal tompeate tal chiquihuite”, dice el mexicanísimo refrán, equivalente de aquel que reza “Hijo de tigre, pintito”. Al paso de los años Andrés L. Viesca se casó y tuvo un hijo, Enrique. En 1932 Alexander Alekhine, a la sazón campeón del mundo, vino a México y jugó diez partidas simultáneas con otros tantos ajedrecistas mexicanos. Nueve de ellos perdieron ante el gran maestro del tablero. Enrique Viesca le hizo tablas, o sea que empató con el campeón mundial.
