“La mejor manera de predecir el futuro es creándolo”; “la planificación a largo plazo no es pensar en decisiones futuras, sino en el futuro de las decisiones presentes”; “el rango no concede privilegios ni da poder. Impone responsabilidad”; “los resultados se obtienen al explotar las oportunidades, no al resolver los problemas”, estas palabras las refiere Peter F. Drucker en una de sus obras.
“MANAGEMENT”
El 11 de noviembre de 2005, a los 96 años de edad, falleció Peter F. Drucker, quien fuera consultor y profesor de negocios, considerado el mayor filósofo de la administración del siglo XX. Sus conceptos e ideas están vigentes y continúan influyendo a estudiosos de las ciencias sociales, investigadores, académicos y personas del ámbito de los negocios.
Sin temor a equivocarme podría decir que, en mucho, la historia de Peter Drucker es la historia de la propia administración del siglo pasado, sus propuestas impulsaron la innovación empresarial, el emprendimiento, la sociedad del conocimiento y el surgimiento de las corporaciones globales; sin duda, Drucker también contribuyó al reconocimiento y respeto de la fuerza laboral.
Drucker dedicó más de 75 años al estudio y análisis del universo empresarial formulando una notable teoría sobre la administración, por eso se le considera el padre de “la gestión en los negocios”. De hecho, Drucker es el “inventor” de la administración (“management”) como campo de estudio.
El genio de Drucker radicaba en su enorme capacidad de descubrir patrones y relaciones entre disciplinas aparentemente inconexas; tal vez por ello, se definía a sí mismo como un “ecologista social”.
Drucker fue un pionero y un innovador en el estudio de temas como la descentralización y la delegación, la dirección por objetivos, la aplicación del “management” a esferas de la vida social distintas a las empresariales, la ética empresarial y la innovación.
INCANSABLE
Sus ideas, teorías y enfoques, han influenciado al mundo corporativo y de negocios desde los años 40. Entre otras contribuciones anticipó el surgimiento de la sociedad del conocimiento, de la innovación como una práctica sistemática y la globalización de la información.
Escribió cientos de artículos y 39 libros, entre los que se encuentran: “The Concept of Corporation” y “La Práctica de la Administración de Empresas’” -considerado la obra más influyente de la historia de la administración-, “La Innovación Sistemática” y “The Effective Executive in Action”.
Algo que distingue a Drucker de muchos otros pensadores del ámbito de los negocios consiste en que no solamente se preocupó por la administración de los recursos de las empresas, sino también cómo las organizaciones deberían operar moral y éticamente en la sociedad.
Posiblemente, al observar el atroz capitalismo, Drucker terminó desilusionándose del corporativismo, por lo que dejó de asesorar a las grandes compañías y, en lugar de ello, ofreció sus servicios a organizaciones sin fines de lucro.
En recuerdo de este hombre, hoy quiero compartir un extraño encuentro que, Peter Drucker, cuando era joven, tuvo con Verdi y Fidias, experiencia que influyó poderosamente durante toda su vida, inspirándolo a buscar la excelencia personal.
GIUSEPPE VERDI
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) fue un notable compositor italiano, uno de los más importantes de todos los tiempos, que creó un sinnúmero de obras; sin embargo, a pesar de su fama e influencia pocos saben que, al postularse al conservatorio de Milán, fue rechazado por carecer de una enseñanza musical sólida; entonces, a partir de esa experiencia, decidió continuar sus estudios en forma privada, buscando siempre la perfección en la composición de sus obras.
La música de Giuseppe Verdi actualmente representa la base del repertorio operístico de infinidad de teatros del mundo; de hecho, en su larga vida (87 años), Giuseppe Verdi compuso 26 óperas, siendo “Falstaff” la última de ellas, la cual se estrenó en 1893, pocos meses antes de que Verdi cumpliera 80 años.
Esta ópera le consumió muchísima energía, esfuerzo, dedicación y tiempo, debido a que es radicalmente diferente a su antiguo estilo. “Falstaff”, es una ópera que no puede considerarse “popular”, como lo son “Rigoletto”, “El trovador”, “Nabucco” o “La Traviata”, pero indudablemente es reconocida universalmente como una obra “donde todo está perfecto que se adelanta a la música del Siglo XX”.
Por otro lado, posiblemente el lector ha oído hablar de Fidias (Atenas, h. 490 a.C.-?, 431 a. C.), considerado el máximo escultor griego al llevar a la escultura a las más altas alturas de perfección y armonía, debido al tratamiento que le dio a la forma, al volumen y a la expresión de sus esculturas. De hecho, Pericles le encargó la supervisión de todas las obras públicas y la realización de cuantas estatuas debían erigirse en la ciudad.
UNA VISIÓN RETADORA
En relación al encuentro con estos dos personajes, Drucker narra lo siguiente:
“Cuando era joven escuché “Falstaff”, la última obra de Verdi y jamás olvidé la impresión que me provocó, al estudiarla, descubrí, para mi gran sorpresa, que esta ópera, con su alegría, su placer por la vida, y su increíble vitalidad, ¡había sido escrita por un hombre de 80 años de edad! Luego leí que el propio Verdi, cuando se le preguntó por qué, a su edad, ya famoso y considerado uno de los principales compositores de ópera del siglo XIX, se había tomado el trabajo de escribir una ópera más, especialmente exigente, a lo que Verdi contestó: “Toda mi vida como músico me esforcé en busca de la perfección. Ésta siempre se me escapó. Con seguridad, tenía la obligación de hacer un intento más”.
Nunca olvidé –dice Drucker- esas palabras (...) Luego decidí que, cualquiera fuera mi trabajo en la vida, las palabras de Verdi iban a ser mi norte y que, si llegaba a una edad avanzada, no renunciaría, sino que seguiría insistiendo. Entretanto, me afanaría a la perfección aun cuando, como bien sabía ésta, indudablemente, siempre se me escaparía”.
Un poco después de haber escuchado la obra de Verdi –comenta Drucker- me encontré con este escrito:
“Alrededor del 440 a.C., se le encargó a Fidias que hiciera las estatuas que, hasta el día de hoy, 2 mil 400 años después, aún prevalecen en el techo del Partenón de Atenas. Y hasta el día de hoy, se incluyen entre las más grandes esculturas de la tradición occidental. Las estatuas fueron universalmente admiradas, pero cuando Fidias presentó su factura, el contador de la ciudad de Atenas se negó a pagarla. “Estas estatuas -dijo- están en el techo del templo, en la colina más alta de Atenas. Nadie puede ver otra cosa que el frente de ellas. No obstante, pretendes cobrar por haberlas esculpido a la perfección e íntegramente, es decir, por hacer sus traseros que nadie puede ver”. “Estás equivocado”, replicó Fidias. “Los dioses pueden verlos”.
“Recuerdo –continúa Drucker- que esta narración me afectó profundamente, especialmente después de la experiencia con Verdi. Ahora, cada vez que la gente me pregunta cuál de mis libros considero el mejor, sonrío y digo: el próximo. Hoy soy más viejo que Verdi cuando escribió Falstaff, y sigo reflexionando y trabajando en dos libros más, cada uno de los cuales, espero, serán mejores que cualquiera de los anteriores, Y más importantes y más cercanos a la excelencia”.
ESTIRAR EL ESPÍRITU
Creo que la perfección es inalcanzable, pero que vale la pena buscarla, estirar el espíritu para alcanzar lo inalcanzable forma parte del anhelo existencial del ser humano, es la esencia de los creadores, de los inconformes, de los rebeldes con causas. Creo que la búsqueda de lo excelso es un estado mental de las personas innovadoras y emprendedoras. Representa la forma de vida de aquellas personas que tienen grandes ideales, de los que sueñan por algo mejor y las que se empeñan por crear lo inexistente.
Drucker supo aproximarse al lindero de la perfección humana en sus actividades profesionales; razón por la cual, lo considero un hombre fuera de serie; indudablemente, su legado así lo confirma.
