¿Cuánto dinero es suficiente? Oxfam, organización no gubernamental de origen británico, realizó en el año 2016 un estudio acerca del total de multimillonarios en el mundo. En esa categoría, incluyeron solo a personas con recursos superiores a los 50 millones de dólares y los resultados son escalofriantes: 128 mil personas, apenas el 0.1 % de los más de 7 mil 500 millones de personas que vivimos en este planeta, tiene más 50 millones de dólares.
Pero Oxfam fue más allá y definió un término que suena hasta grotesco: “riqueza extrema”, un grupo, en donde para ingresar, es necesario tener un patrimonio superior a los mil millones de dólares. Los ricos extremos sumaron apenas 92. Apenas 92 personas en todo el mundo tienen más dinero que la mitad más pobre de todo el planeta.
¿Pero este dinero les da tranquilidad? ¿Son más felices que usted y yo? Un proyecto de investigación que lleva el nombre de “Las Alegrías y Dilemas de la Riqueza” y que estuvo a cargo del Centro de bienestar y filantropía de Boston, reveló información tan sorprendente y a veces absurda, pues muestra a los multimillonarios como seres humanos infelices, deprimidos e insatisfechos.
El estudio que encuestó a 165 hombres, se centró principalmente en los dilemas y el entender por qué son seres insatisfechos. El resultado de esta investigación asegura que los encuestados piensan que su dinero, más que darles tranquilidad les produce ansiedad. De hecho, y aunque usted no lo crea, la mayoría todavía no se considera financieramente segura; pues para eso, dicen, requerirían en promedio un cuarto más de riqueza de la que poseen.
Incluso uno de los entrevistados, heredero de una enorme fortuna declaró: “No me sentí seguro financieramente hasta que tuve mil millones de dólares en el banco”. Con muchos años de anticipación acertó el filósofo alemán Arthur Schopenhauer, cuando en su libro “El Arte de ser feliz”, escribió: “La riqueza se parece al agua de mar; cuanta más bebemos, tanto más sedientos nos sentimos”.
Inverosímil pero hoy, podemos saber que los millonarios, tienen dilemas y problemas, similares a las del resto del mundo, y que viven tan preocupados por el futuro de su dinero, tal y como usted y yo vivimos preocupados por nuestro futuro, pero sin dinero.
Angustiados, los millonarios se hacen dos preguntas: ¿Tengo el dinero suficiente para no quebrar? y ¿Estoy educando bien a mis hijos? La mayor preocupación de los millonarios son los hijos, su formación y a borrar en ellos la idea de que el dinero resuelve la vida pues lo que único que logró el dinero es precisamente lo contrario: se las arruinó.
Los multimillonarios, dice el psicólogo Robert A. Kenny, uno de los participantes en el estudio, que sobre el dinero, “de preocupan por perderlo, se preocupan por cómo invertirlo o las repercusiones de tenerlo. A medida que se incrementan los ceros, crecen los dilemas”.
Se sienten aislados, e incluso a algunos, la riqueza los hace tan infelices como a algunos pobres los hace la pobreza. Los lujos se convierten en una necesidad y a veces en una incomodidad, llegando a creer que la gente se acerca a ellos por su dinero y en muchas ocasiones tienen razón, ya que existen personas dedicadas a agradarles y a convertirse en sus bufones. Los ejemplos locales abundan, usted solo ponga los nombres y apellidos tanto de bufones como de millonarios que los contratan.
Los sujetos motivo del estudio, reflejaron su preocupación real de que en ellos y sus familias se confirme algo que ha sido estudiado a detalle: el 70% de los grandes patrimonios, no pasan jamás de una tercera generación, pues aquello que solo se ha podido alcanzar con grandes esfuerzos, limitaciones y mucho trabajo, se pierde en el lapso de una generación.
Que si la fortuna es producto del esfuerzo personal, quien la posee muestra un gran nivel de confianza; pero si ha sido heredada, buena parte de ellos son dominados por sus demonios y se deprimen buscando sin éxito, alcanzar la gloria y el reconocimiento que alguna vez tuvieron sus padres o abuelos.
Es extraño, pero en lo personal y al contrario de lo que sostenía Oscar Wilde, creo que existe solo una clase de personas que se preocupan más por el dinero que los pobres: los ricos.
