El músico soñó una hermosa melodía, más bella que las más bellas melodías de Mozart, Schubert o Chopin.
Despertó al punto, y de inmediato encendió la luz para anotarla. Desolado se dio cuenta de que la había olvidado.
No pudo recordarla, por más esfuerzos que hizo esa noche y en los siguientes días. Y lloraba, porque esa melodía era la más sublime que el mundo habría escuchado y él no la podía repetir.
Su vida se volvió un continuado sufrimiento. Lo consumía la pena. Fue languideciendo poco a poco, y nada pudieron hacer los médicos por él. Murió por fin el músico. Murió de tristeza, pero eso nada más nosotros lo sabemos.
Cuando llegó a la morada celestial el Señor le abrió la puerta de su casa. Entró al músico al Cielo y oyó una melodía hermosísima. Era la que él había soñado. Le dijo al Señor:
—Creí que esa melodía la había escrito yo.
—Tú la escribiste –le contestó el Señor. Es tu melodía.
Casi todos los músicos se van al Cielo, porque casi todos sufren mucho aquí en la tierra. Allá escuchan sus melodías. Pero eso nada más nosotros lo sabemos.
