Los asuntos del corazón influyen en la Historia mucho más de lo que los asuntos de la Historia influyen en el corazón. Los acontecimientos mexicanos en la época del Segundo Imperio dependieron mucho del mariscal francés Aquiles Bazaine, y este señor dependió mucho de su esposa, la joven mexicana Pepita Peña.
El mariscal Bazaine tenía 54 años de edad. Actualmente eso equivale a estar en plenitud de vida, en una segunda juventud, y más aún cuando se vive en una ciudad como Saltillo, cuyas miríficas aguas conservan a los varones en una perpetua flor de edad. Sin embargo en aquellos tiempos –los de mediados del antepasado siglo– cinco décadas de vida constituían los umbrales de la ancianidad. Bien puede decirse, entonces, que Bazaine había llegado ya a la vejez, que era un anciano.
Además el mariscal era más feo que Picio. Chaparro, barrigón, cejijunto, coloradote, sin mucho pelo afuera de la cabeza ni mucho seso adentro, era colérico, vanidoso, muy dado a dejarse llevar por la murmuración. Intrigante, subió en el escalafón militar más por sus cortesanías que por sus triunfos en campaña. Una cosa, empero, nadie le podía negar: su valentía. Era un soldado valeroso; más de una vez se comportó en las batallas como un cadete ansioso de gloria militar.
Cuando enviudó de su primera esposa se mostró un viudo inconsolable. Sus compatriotas se reían a escondidas de él; decían que la muerte de su mujer debió alegrarlo, pues la señora había sido en vida demasiado alegre: en las ausencias de su esposo se hacía acompañar por Pedro, Juan y varios; muchos varios. Hubo necesidad de incautar los periódicos franceses que llegaron a México en esos días, pues al comentar la muerte de Madame Bazaine los picarescos gacetilleros parisinos no pusieron freno a su pluma para recordar las hazañas eróticas de la muertita.
A los pocos meses de quedar viudo conoció Bazaine a una encantadora muchacha mexicana, Pepita Peña. Si Bazaine tenía 54 años ella acababa de cumplir los 17. En una carta de mujer a mujer –es decir, con muchos chismes– describió Carlota a la emperatriz de Francia, Eugenia de Montijo, la persona de Pepita Peña:
“...Tiene 17 años, una bonita cara, muchísima gracia y sencillez, hermosos cabellos negros y un tipo español muy expresivo. Es hija única, su madre es viuda, pertenece a una buena familia y está muy bien educada. Habla correctamente el francés. Parece no notar la admiración de que es objeto, ni el gran porvenir que se abre ante ella... El mariscal ha empezado a bailar de nuevo; me confesó que en los bailes a los que va con Pepita no deja de bailar ni una sola pieza...”.
Por su parte Maximiliano escribió en una carta a su hermano Carlos Luis:
“...Bazaine anda de novio con una encantadora mexicana de 17 años que por su belleza y amabilidad nos honraría en Europa. El mariscal, tres veces más viejo que su novia, está enamorado como un tonto...”.
Se casaron Bazaine y su Pepita. De inmediato el mariscal sintió deseos de regresar a Francia para disfrutar en su país los goces de su matrimonio y mostrar en la corte la belleza de aquel encanto de mujer que había conquistado. Por eso acortó su estancia en México, y se fue llevándose consigo a su ejército. Maximiliano perdió el apoyo que tenía, y fue vencido por Juárez. No sé si el Benemérito le haya dado las gracias a Pepita Peña por esa tan significativa aportación a la noble causa de la República. Armando Fuentes Aguirre
