Surgió en Gran Bretaña en 1992 y se fue expandiendo a otros países
Vivimos una época en la que la obesidad y el sobrepeso son constantes, de ahí que la gente cuando menos una vez en la vida se somenta a regímenes alimentarios estrictos para conseguir el peso ideal. Sin embargo, muchas veces se caen en la exageración y eso puede acarrear problemas. Hay quienes se obsesionan con la delgadez. Y para alertar sobre los peligros se conmemora desde 1992 el Día Internacional Sin Dietas.
La iniciativa “Diet Breakers” surgió en Gran Bretaña, de la mano de la feminista Mary Evans Young y, poco a poco al pasar de los años, se fue expandiendo a otros países. Uno de principales objetivos es el de alertar sobre los riesgos de la anorexia y otros desórdenes alimentarios, muchas veces asociados a la exigencia de encajar en el ideal de belleza única.
“Desde hace muchos años se ha comprobado científicamente que, frente a la restricción, ya sea calórica o de placer -es decir las dietas extremas en calorías o que retiran lo preferido-, se pone en marcha una respuesta psiconeuroendocrina (psicológica, neurológica y hormonal) que se opone al descenso de peso. De hecho, en el último Congreso Europeo de Obesidad, que terminó hace pocos días, fue un eje central el tema de que no hay una dieta mejor que otra y que lo más importante es la adherencia. Y para la adherencia a largo plazo, las dietas tal como las conocemos, las ortodoxas, en general no funcionan, salvo por poco tiempo”, afirma a Clarín Mónica Katz, presidenta de la Sociedad Argentina de Nutrición.
Las dietas y la regulación excesiva de los alimentos pueden causar graves daños a nuestra salud física y mental. “Estudios han demostrado que las dietas tienen una tasa de fracaso del 98%. Una dieta no es más que una negación de una nutrición saludable para nuestro cuerpo, no es más que la vía de comercialización global que abusa del término para hablar de un cuerpo y una vida mejor, pero negociando con el grave problema de la obesidad”, precisa.
