Legendario #42
En enero de 1919, nació en Georgia (EUA), un hombre que habría de cambiar las reglas del juego en uno de los deportes más estratégicos y notables. Me refiero a Jackie Roosevelt Robinson (1919-1972), el hombre que rompió la barrera racial en el beisbol, que abrió el camino para muchos futuros atletas afroamericanos y de otras minorías, y que contribuyó al movimiento de los Derechos Civiles en Estados Unidos y en el mundo.
“La vida no es importante a menos que influyas en la vida de otros”, de esto se trata una película dramática que acabo de volver a disfrutar, la cual aborda la vida de Jackie, cuyo único “defecto” fue su color de piel, por lo que tuvo que luchar contra el racismo, las humillaciones y los constantes abusos en un deporte considerado exclusivo para “blancos”.
Pocos saben que este hombre también fue el primer afroamericano en ser vicepresidente en una compañía Fortune 500; que sirvió como asesor de políticos y que emprendió un banco y una empresa inmobiliaria. También fue condecorado en forma póstuma con Medalla de Oro del Congreso y la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad.
El testimonio de Jackie desafía a todas las personas a buscar una vida con un excelso propósito y sentido.
MISMO NÚMERO
La película me recordó aquel 15 de abril del 2007, se celebró un significativo aniversario.
El corresponsal Ralph Dannheisser así narró el suceso: “cuando el equipo Nationals de Washington saltó al terreno de juego para jugar en contra de los Mets de Nueva York, el jugador en la posición de parador en corto, vistió el uniforme con el número 42. También llevaba ese número el receptor... y el lanzador. Y también el bateador de los Mets. De hecho, 330 jugadores, entrenadores y managers en toda la Gran Liga de Béisbol (USA) llevaron el número 42 ese día”.
“No se trataba de una confusión, sino de un tributo del beisbol a Jackie Roosevelt Robinson que, en la misma fecha, pero en el año 1947, rompió la barrera del color, establecida desde la década de 1880, regla que impedía que los afros estadounidenses jugaran beisbol en las grandes ligas”. Absurdo, pero cierto.
El número 42 fue retirado de la liga y el 15 de abril es considerado el día de Jackie Robinson.
SALÓN DE LA FAMA
Jackie fue el primer hombre de color en ingresar al salón de la fama de ese país, la placa alusiva menciona: “novato del año en 1947, jugador más valioso en 1949 y ganador de los 6 banderines de la liga nacional con Brooklyn y primer campeonato de serie mundial de los Dodgers en 1955”. Este hombre fue un estupendo pelotero y jamás dejó de sorprender durante los 10 años que jugó en las ligas mayores.
ODIO
Algunos jugadores de su equipo lo agredían constantemente, el público intentó boicotear los partidos en los que Jackie jugaba, incluso cuando iba a batear muchos aficionados ofensivamente se ponían de espalda y en ocasiones le lanzaron objetos.
Jackie también recibió múltiples amenazas de muerte, inaceptable realidad de discriminación que afectó la vida de toda su familia.
Es patético y contradictorio lo que se puede observar en el área de exhibición del museo de la fama, dedicada a Jackie: cartas que le fueron enviadas repletas de aborrecimiento. Misivas que en el mejor de los casos expresaban repulsión:
“Oye negro, por qué no regresas al campo de algodón al que perteneces”. “Te esperan en la selva negrito” y “Si juegas de noche, tendrán que ponerte pintura lumínica para poderte ver”.
Estas hojas, atiborradas de palabras de animadversión, representan un recordatorio permanente de los alcances que pueden tener la ignorancia, envidia, discriminación y la intolerancia humana, justo como hoy estamos siendo testigos.
NO RESPONDER
Independientemente de las cualidades atléticas de Jackie, lo que paulatinamente impactó a todos los jugadores de la liga –y también a sus seguidores- fue la tremenda actitud para ofrecer “la otra mejilla” y su altísimo espíritu competitivo para combatir e imponerse frente a cualquier adversidad.
No puedo imaginar lo que este hombre sintió en su corazón, en su ser, pues -como lo comenté- cada vez que salía al diamante Jackie invariablemente era el centro de insultos y burlas de miles de personas que ante su aparición, convertían su apasionada afición en odio racial, sin embargo, él no se inmutaba ante estas agresiones, hoy su serenidad representa un ejemplo a seguir por los deportistas y a todas las personas que, ante cualquier situación, pierden los estribos, generan miradas de rencor y palabras de desprecio.
Insisto, una de sus grandes virtudes fue callar, lo cual requiere valor, prudencia y dominio. Él calló, pero sus actos alzaron la voz y su testimonio sigue hablando.
Con su silencio, silenció a sus adversarios, conducta que lo alejó de toda cobardía y lo levantó sobre los insensatos.
Jackie soportó las agresiones físicas, mismas que lo transformaron en una persona resiliente. Cuando calló y dejó que su talento y acciones hablaran por él se convirtió en un ser humano fuera de serie. Heroico.
Paulatinamente, su silencio, paciencia y destreza en el diamante, mereció el respeto de los adversarios, de los redactores deportivos y luego del mundo entero.
Jackie no fue un hombre cobarde al no responder las injurias; más bien, fue un ser humano “con valor para no responder”; tal vez por ello solía decir: “no me interesa si gusto o no... Lo que pretendo es que me respeten como ser humano”.
Jackie deja una lección invaluable: deja que tu talento hable y sea el que calle a los insensatos, ignorantes e “impensantes”.
SIN PRECEDENTES
En el Salón de la Fama del Beisbol, la placa asignada al hombre que portara el #42, honra no solo al deportista, sino, glorifica a un ser humano por su indómito carácter y nobleza para resistir a las ofensas e insultos de una sociedad racista.
Esto representa un reconocimiento y estímulo para las personas que han sentido que no pertenecen, que son exiliados, ultrajados, que han padecido “bullying”, o que piensan que no son lo suficientemente valiosos por alguna u otra razón para desempeñar un trabajo u oficio.
¿SEGUIMOS IGUAL?
Han pasado décadas de la hazaña de Jackie, pero desgraciadamente continúa la discriminación en el mundo. Persistentemente, entre nosotros sigue habitando el fantasma de la segregación: seres humanos sufriendo, física o emocionalmente, por su preferencia religiosa o sexual, por sus ideologías políticas, por sus orígenes étnicos, inclusive por sus padecimientos clínicos, género, edad o condición socioeconómica. Discriminación alentada en diversos gobiernos por la división y odio que pregonan sus más altos mandatarios.
¿De qué sirve el avance tecnológico si el corazón humano permanece en un estado primitivo, rústico?, ¿cuál es la utilidad del conocimiento científico si no hemos desarrollado el carácter para respetar las diferencias humanas, si abandonamos nuestra propia humanidad?
En todo caso ¿conocemos nuestra responsabilidad individual ante la discriminación?, ¿somos lo suficientemente humildes para reconocer las virtudes de los otros?, ¿acaso competimos para no ser pisados y esto nos arrastra a la vez a pisar a otros?, ¿qué estamos inculcando a nuestros hijos?
SU VOZ
Jackie falleció el 24 de octubre de 1972, pero su inquebrantable espíritu sigue presente en los estadios de beisbol y en los movimientos antirracistas; su dicho “en la vida no puedes ser un espectador. Si vas a gastar tu vida en las graderías mirando qué pasa, creo que la estás malgastando”, representa un testimonio de lucha.
La sonoridad del silencio de Jackie se ha transformado, junto con la de muchos más, en potente voz, en una denuncia permanente y acciones concretas que emprenden globalmente millones de personas que sencillamente claman y exigen respeto y justicia para todos los seres humanos.
El espíritu de Jackie continúa vigente, sigue influyendo en el “diamante” de la vida cotidiana, siendo el número 42, símbolo de igualdad y, por qué no, de heroísmo. Su testimonio también debería alentarnos para alzar la voz ante lo injustificable, ante el inadmisible odio, la división, las mentiras y el miedo que perversos e insensatos cotidianamente siembran en México.
