Advierte Jerome Powell que se requerirían medidas más duras para contener el avance de los precios
Ante la fortaleza de la inflación registrada en enero y a la espera de nueva información, la Reserva Federal (Fed) de Estados Unidos advirtió que está preparada para dar pasos más grandes si se necesitan medidas más duras para controlar el crecimiento de los precios, dijo ayer el presidente de la Fed, Jerome Powell.

“Los últimos datos económicos han sido más fuertes de lo esperado, lo que sugiere que el nivel final de las tasas de interés será probablemente más alto de lo previsto”, dijo Powell en declaraciones preparadas para una audiencia ante la Comisión de Banca del Senado estadounidense.
Son las primeras declaraciones del jefe de la Fed desde que la inflación se disparó inesperadamente en enero y de que el Gobierno informó de un aumento inusualmente grande de las nóminas no agrícolas para ese mes.
Si bien parte de esa inesperada fortaleza económica puede haberse debido al clima cálido y otros efectos estacionales, Powell dijo que la Fed era consciente de que también puede ser una señal de que el banco central necesita hacer más para moderar la inflación, tal vez incluso volver a mayores aumentos de tasas que el cuarto de punto porcentual que los funcionarios habían estado planeando mantener.
“Si la totalidad de los datos indica que se justifica un endurecimiento monetario más rápido, estaríamos preparados para aumentar el ritmo de las alzas de tasas”, dijo Powell.
