Barrett Strong, Enrique Guzmán y Bonnie Raitt

Siguiendo con la semana del Grammy, enero terminó con el fallecimiento de Barrett Strong, ganador del Grammy a la Mejor Canción R&B de 1973 por el tema “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”.
Nacido el 5 de febrero de 1941 en West Point, Mississippi en Estados Unidos, Strong fue el primer cantante en grabar un éxito para el icónico sello discográfico Motown, aunque fue más reconocido como compositor principalmente asociado con el productor Norman Whittfield y escribiendo, además, la letra de muchas de las canciones de la agrupación The Temptations. Precisamente junto a Whittfield y The Temptations, del tema que le dio a ganar a Strong el Grammy a la Mejor Canción R&B de 1973, aunque también obtuvo nominaciones en la misma terna en 1969 y 1972 por rolas también en coautoría con Whittfield como “I Wish It Would Rain” y “Smiling Faces Sometimes”, entre otras más.
El mes comenzó por otro lado, y previo a la fiesta de los Grammys el domingo pasado, con el cumpleaños número 80 del cantante de origen venezolano Enrique Guzmán, nacido el 1 de febrero de 1943 en Caracas, Venezuela. Vocalista y miembro fundador de los Teen Tops, grupo considerado como uno de los pioneros del rock and roll en México y ya como solista se convirtió en el cantante más popular de México en aquella década del lado de otros contemporáneos suyos como Angélica María, César Costa y Alberto Vázquez, con quienes se mantuvo de forma recurrente en conciertos hasta etapa prepandemia. Guzmán aprovechó la ocasión de su cumpleaños para hacer la presentación de su más reciente producción discográfica apoyada por su respectiva gira de conciertos. Muchas felicidades.
Y volviendo a los Grammys, además de que para nuestro beneplácito se nos cumplió que se repartieran los premios grandes artistas como los británicos Harry Styles y Adele y la texana Beyoncé rompiendo récords en la historia del premio al sobrepasar 32 ganador en diversas categorías y por otros tantos álbumes y al “Conejo Malo” lo limitaran únicamente en ganar uno en la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Música Urbana ... si es que a lo que hace se le puede llamar música. Lo que sí fue una sorpresa no solo para sus competidores sino a ella misma, es que la cantante iniciada en la música de folk, blues y rock Bonnie Raitt y ganadora previa de un total de nada despreciables 13 premios Grammy, se alzó con uno más y muy importante como lo es el de la Mejor Canción del 2022 por su tema “Just Like That”-
Aunque su álbum debut se remonta al año de 1971, a Raitt la comenzamos a reconocer a partir de su participación a principios de los años 80 en la banda sonora y como ella misma en la taquillara cinta “Un cowboy de la ciudad” (“Urban Cowboy”), con John Travolta y Debra Winger, pero fue a finales de la misma década cuando se consolidó gracias a su trabajo como cantante y compositora de su décimo álbum “Nick of Time” (1989), el cual además de llegar a la cima de los 200 álbumes del Billboard le dio a ganar el Grammy al Álbum del Año y dio la pauta para ganar los 12 siguientes entre los que se incluyó el que ganó el domingo y que la inspiró una historia relacionada a la donación de órganos. ¡Muchas felicidades y que sigan los éxitos!
