En 1830 ocurrió en Paris un incidente un tanto insólito que es recordado hasta hoy como símbolo de los conflictos entre estéticas teatrales y los extremos a los que estos pueden llegar. El estreno de “Hernani” de Víctor Hugo, tiene la particularidad de no ser recordado por el desempeño de los artistas, sino por la serie de disturbios que desató en el público y que terminó en lucha a golpes entre clásicos y románticos. Los clásicos defendían los parámetros estéticos respetados hasta entonces, mientras que los románticos se inclinaban desde hacía tiempo por un cambio y flexibilización de los mismos.
Si recuerdo esto ahora, es quizás porque mientras más lo analizo, más me parece que la Muestra Nacional de Teatro sucedida el año pasado en Torreón, vino a evidenciar el lento pero seguro cambio que el arte teatral ha venido sufriendo en las últimas décadas y que por fin ha acabado por alcanzarnos. Es evidente para mí que el arte teatral en Saltillo, aunque con menos rapidez que en otros lugares – y tal vez menos entusiasmo – ha comenzado a dar acogida a propuestas y teatralidades que ponen a las distintas generaciones de creadores teatrales en conflicto. Por suerte, al menos hasta ahora, de una forma más pacífica que la de los franceses del siglo XIX.
Todos los extremos son peligrosos y no sólo porque nos pueden llevar a convertir un teatro en escenario de una batalla campal, sino porque es imposible que uno u otro lado tenga la verdad absoluta. Hoy, vemos a un lado aferrarse a la estructura del drama, el teatro que dominó el siglo XX y que se fundamenta en la ficción realista para entregar su mensaje; mientras, el otro extremo se deleita en ver hasta dónde la práctica teatral puede ser expandida, enfrentándose a las fronteras y al status que en búsqueda de nuevas formas de comunicar. Si preguntan a cada bando, cada uno tiene sus argumentos perfectamente razonables para aferrarse a su punto de vista, sin embargo, no siempre se aventuran a ver al otro lado. Los “tradicionalistas” quizás por miedo o por simple desconocimiento de como explorar esas nuevas propuestas, los “vanguardistas” quizás porque los métodos tradicionales, consciente o inconscientemente, han creado más traumas y rechazo a las nuevas generaciones de lo que han generado experiencias memorables. A unos les parece que el arte teatral en su afán de exploración acabará por diluirse en la nada, a otros les parece que los viejos métodos ya no transmiten nada.
Pues bien, tal vez deberíamos de mirar con más detenimiento a los espectadores, porque puede ser que en ellos encontremos la respuesta. La mayoría de las veces, el espectador no prefiere una estética sobre otra, simplemente prefiere aquello que le provoca algo. En lo personal, confieso que aún me descubro capaz de mirar un teatro más tradicional y deleitarme en ello, siempre que los recursos dentro de ese enfoque estén manejados con maestría y cuidado. De la misma forma, el teatro en el campo expandido en su cualidad desestabilizadora añade un valioso elemento de frescura y nuevas ideas que me ayudan a cuestionar el lugar donde vivimos. Buenos productos son posibles en ambos bandos, productos mediocres son más que posibles en ambos lados. Por eso, me parece fundamental que el creador, sean cuales sean sus métodos, tenga la maestría suficiente para manejarlos.
“No es a la fuerza que uno tiene que hacer teatro expandido” escuché en una conversación hace algunas semanas, y no hay frase que me parezca en estos momentos más acertada. La batalla de Hernani no simboliza solamente un conflicto entre estéticas, el teatro de los clásicos era un teatro aristocrático que no se interesaba por el pueblo y por el que el pueblo no se interesaba. Siempre que un teatro sea relevante y adecuado para la sociedad en la que se encuentra inserido, será un teatro que merece ser hecho. Pero no nos olvidemos que el teatro es convivio; si el acto de mostrar no es relevante para aquel al que se muestra, sólo seremos artistas ensimismados en sí mismos.
