Datos interesantes en la industria del streaming
Esta semana, la industria del streaming tuvo dos noticias de impacto. La primera se suscitó a inicios de la semana, cuando Netflix reportó una fuerte caída en sus suscriptores, lo que le representó a su vez una gran pérdida económica en su cotización en la bolsa. Esto cimbró a la industria, ya que el principal jugador pareciera estar en problemas. Pero esta pérdida en el negocio no fue un fenómeno aislado, sino que se sintió en todo el mundo.
La segunda fue la decisión de Warner de cerrar la recién lanzada plataforma de streaming CNNplus.
Un evento que puso a temblar a más de uno pues, como bien dicen, “cuando veas las barbas de tus vecinos cortar, pon las tuyas a remojar.”
¿Qué está pasando con la industria del contenido y el streaming? Todo parece indicar que varios factores se han alineado en este fenómeno. Vamos por partes:
La primera es que ciertamente la pandemia y el encierro representaron un boom para el consumo de contenidos; las personas se acostumbraron a tener más tiempo disponible.
Durante el confinamiento, el usuario se limitó a consumir contenido on demand y durante amplios rangos de tiempo. No obstante, con el fin del encierro y con medidas cada vez más laxas, el consumo simplemente bajó, pero los precios no. En economías golpeadas por la crisis, los usuarios comenzaron a eliminar algunas de sus múltiples suscripciones para quedarse con servicios básicos de entretenimiento.

Aquí, los gigantes como Netflix no sufrieron, pero sí algunos de los competidores más pequeños, quienes resintieron fuertemente el descenso de suscripciones en sus plataformas.
Otro de los fenómenos del momento es la saturación de plataformas de streaming que estamos presenciando a nivel global. La guerra del contenido está haciendo que la atención de los usuarios sea cada vez menor. Mientras que, previo a la pandemia, los usuarios podían destinar gran parte de su tiempo a consumir contenido en Netflix, con la salida de tantos competidores, ahora dicha atención se diluye entre varias opciones.
Algunas sencillamente tienden a morir, esto es lo que comienza a verse en el descenso de suscriptores de servicios de streaming. A pesar de que Netflix es un commodity, parece que el gigante del contenido está alcanzando su techo de usuarios. De acuerdo con un estudio de The CIU, la creciente competencia de plataformas ha propiciado que Netflix pierda terreno en México. Aunque mantiene el 63.5% del mercado, en los últimos 6 meses se contrajo 12.3%. Las plataformas tienen hoy en día más jugadores, como: ViX, Disney+, HBO Max y Amazon Prime, entre otros.
El tercer fenómeno que estamos observando parece estar más alineado a decisiones corporativas. ¿Cómo podemos explicar el cierre de CNNplus?
Todo parece indicar que el análisis que desarrollaron en el corporativo sobre la viabilidad de una plataforma de paga exclusiva de contenido noticioso no estuvo muy bien implementada. Los cálculos de la empresa hablaban de 150 mil suscriptores; pero, de acuerdo con información del New York Times, los usuarios activos no pasaban ni de los 10 mil. ¿Quién fue el responsable de una decisión corporativa que comprometió millones de dólares por la esperanza de un servicio de streaming noticioso?
Otro caso fue la decisión de Netflix de comenzar a poner más candados para compartir suscripciones entre usuarios y cerrando dicha capacidad únicamente para los miembros del mismo hogar. Una de las acciones que han elevado las críticas hacia la plataforma, principalmente entre los usuarios más comprometidos con la misma.
La pregunta que queda en el aire es, ¿quién será el ganador con estos movimientos en la industria del streaming? Netflix ya comienza a pensar en un modelo de “comerciales” para solventar su operación. Algunas otras plataformas contemplan integrar contenidos de otras compañías dentro de sus opciones, para tratar de encontrar más usuarios.
¿Será que el streaming, que tanto luchó en contra de la TV de Paga y el modelo de la TV tradicional, tendrá que decir al final del día: “Back to the basics”?
