¿Solos? Hay que usar el celular

La soledad no solamente es una emoción negativa sino además es un problema de salud mental que puedo provocar una enfermedad del corazón y aún más hasta la muerte. El doctor Daniel Kahneman, psicólogo israelí y Premio Nobel de Economía, afirma que el sentimiento de soledad es uno de los factores psicológicos más importantes que afectan negativamente el bienestar de las personas. Un estudio realizado el año pasado por la organización americana National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) reconoce que la soledad tiene riesgos muy graves en la salud mental. Aún antes del COVID-19, la soledad ya se consideraba una epidemia en los Estados Unidos afectando a 3 de cada 5 adultos.
La doctora Julianne Holt-Lunstad, profesora de Psicología y Neurociencia de la Universidad Brigham Young, realizó un estudio en colaboración con investigadores de Australia e Inglaterra; recomiendan realizar pequeños actos de bondad hacia los vecinos y amigos pues reducen el sentimiento de soledad y el aislamiento social. En febrero del 2021, JAMA Psychiatry publicó un estudio titulado “Effect of Layperson-Delivered, Empathy-Focused Program of Telephone Calls on Loneliness, Depression, and Anxiety Among Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic” (El efecto de un programa focalizado en empatía usando celulares en adultos con soledad, depresión y ansiedad durante la pandemia del COVID-19) donde se encontró una reducción en sentimientos de soledad, depresión y ansiedad en adultos entre 27 y 101 años, después de 4 semanas haciendo llamadas usando sus celulares, comparado con el grupo control.
El COVID ha acentuado más el problema de soledad, no solamente en jóvenes y adolescentes, sino además en los adultos. Japón creó hace pocos meses el Ministerio de la Soledad por el incremento de suicidios en aquel país. En el año 2018, Inglaterra fundó una organización muy similar para prevenir problemas de salud mental ocasionados por el aislamiento social y la soledad. Entiendo que la mejor relación social se realiza con acercamiento social y una interacción física cara a cara (face to face) que la tecnología jamás podrá sustituir. Sin embargo, en esta pandemia donde el alejamiento físico y social es obligatorio, el celular es una excelente alternativa para reducir los efectos negativos emocionales al sentirnos solos. Las llamadas telefónicas hacen una gran diferencia al disminuir los sentimientos de miedo y ansiedad.
Hay que tener cuidado, según la investigación, ya que la solución no está en hacer o recibir una llamada telefónica sino en la calidad de conversación y empatía que hacen la diferencia. Calidez y actitud de escucha son fundamentales para lograr desarrollar una mejor comunicación y reducir las emociones negativas que produce la soledad. El estudio publicado en JAMA Psychiatry enfatiza la importancia de cambiar la actitud negativa que tienen muchas personas de la tercera edad con respecto al uso de la tecnología, especialmente el celular y la tableta. La era digital ha abierto los canales de comunicación especialmente para los que no podemos estar en forma presencial.
