El emperador filósofo

Los libros de cabecera son aquellos títulos que tenemos siempre cerca. La cabecera, según los diccionarios, es la parte de la cama donde se ponen las almohadas. Un libro de cabecera sería, entonces, el que vigila nuestro sueño o quizá el que sueña junto con nosotros. Recuerdo la expresión en inglés que da título a la famosa película de Peter Greenaway, “The Pillow Book”. Este nombre, mucho más poético, hace referencia a los antiguos japoneses que guardaban, bajo las almohadas, sus diarios íntimos. Esta columna, en su estructura, está hecha con mis lecturas de cabecera. Esas que definen la vida. Aunque siguiendo el juego de palabras, me gusta llamar así a los libros que no salen de mi cabeza. Esta semana acudí a uno de ellos: “Meditaciones” del filósofo estoico y emperador romano Marco Aurelio. Un título más que pertinente para referirse a las obras que acompañan nuestro pensamiento.
“Meditaciones” podría ser esa clase de libro que tiene la virtud de dar serenidad. Quizá la palabra más adecuada sea “consuelo”, como advierten los editores. Lo mismo me sucede con otros textos, particularmente los poéticos, como “Hojas de hierba”, de Whitman, o el “Eclesiastés”. Porque, ¿quién no ha sentido desesperación, intranquilidad en el espíritu? Marco Aurelio, sin embargo, tiene una historia muy distinta a la de los poetas. Desde adolescente supo que sería el sucesor del emperador romano Antonino y subió al trono a los 40 años, a mediados del siglo II. Recibió una educación esmerada y se le recuerda como un hombre sensible, aunque no sin sus contradicciones. Por eso sorprende que alguien con semejante perfil haya dejado una de las obras más memorables de la filosofía estoica. Además, a Marco Aurelio le tocó resolver un periodo violento marcado por innumerables guerras e invasiones al imperio. En medio de la turbulencia, el emperador conservó sus ideales de gobierno, que eran el reflejo de su ética como filósofo.
Carlos García Gual, en el prólogo de “Meditaciones” de la versión de Gredos, asegura que Marco Aurelio, como escritor, “es más monótono y gris que el hábil Séneca” y como pensador no es “original ni complicado”, esto último era típico de los estoicos. Es cierto que libros como “Cartas a Lucilo” tienen más recursos literarios que las “Meditaciones”, pero en profundidad ambos títulos son valiosos. El estilo llano y sincero de Marco Aurelio resulta conmovedor en las sentencias que hila a lo largo de doce capítulos (o libros). Insiste todo el tiempo en no aferrarse a la fama o al poder, porque nada importa para la posteridad. La vida es breve y lo bueno está en el actuar y en el espíritu. Una idea fuerte para el emperador, quien vio morir un por uno a todos los que amó.
El libro aconseja sobre las situaciones humanas del día a día, como la ira, el rencor, la angustia y el amor. Marco Aurelio, que dirigió tantos conflictos bélicos, pensaba que la vida era “una lucha, un destierro”. Lo único que nos lleva a la salvación es la filosofía: “Y ésta consiste en conservar el dios interior sin ultraje ni daño, para que triunfe de placeres y dolores, para que no obre al acaso, y se mantenga lejos de toda falsead y disimulo”. El emperador escribió este texto en sus últimos años y anhelaba, con él, legar una sabiduría a los futuros dirigentes. Sucedió lo contrario, tras la muerte de Marco Aurelio, el imperio decayó por la ausencia de virtud.
Desde las primeras líneas, el filósofo advierte que “se puede vivir en la corte sin tener necesidad de una guardia personal, de vestidos lujosos, de lámparas, de estatuas y otras cosas parejas y de tal pompa; y que, por el contrario, cabe muy bien ceñirse casi a la condición de un simple particular, sin proceder por ello indigna o negligentemente con relación a los deberes que impone la soberanía del estado”. Otro mundo sería si se hubiera cumplido el sueño de Marco Aurelio y los gobernantes tomaran las “Meditaciones” como libro de cabecera, pero parece que debajo de sus almohadas hay obras de otras voces, como la de Maquiavelo.
