El espejo, tu peor enemigo

¿Por qué al vernos al espejo nos enfocamos en nuestros defectos –especialmente nuestras hijas? Nos obsesionamos con el peso extra, el acné que no podemos ocultar con el maquillaje o la forma de la nariz. La mayoría hemos tenido pensamientos sobre nuestros cuerpos en algún momento de nuestras vidas. Nuestros hijos sufren ahora con el trastorno de dismorfia corporal, que consiste en la no aceptación y obsesión de las imperfecciones físicas, reales o percibidas que interfieren en nuestra autoestima y relaciones con la vida diaria.
Nuestras hijas adolescentes pueden sufrir este trastorno a partir de sus 11 o 12 años. Generalmente se maquillan en la oscuridad para no ver sus defectos al encender la luz. Todos hemos tenido en algún momento de nuestra vida rechazo hacia alguna parte de nuestro cuerpo, pero para los que la tienen, la dismorfia corporal consume su vida todos los días. Las estadísticas nos indican que 1 de cada 10 adolescentes pueden sufrir dismorfia corporal. Estas personas se sienten tan avergonzadas por su físico que se aíslan o no viven la vida con plenitud. Los pensamientos negativos sobre la apariencia física causan serios problemas como angustia extrema, ansiedad, depresión o hasta pensamientos suicidas.
La dismorfia corporal es un trastorno que distorsiona la percepción propia de su apariencia corporal, produce baja autoestima y roba la felicidad. Los defectos imaginarios muchas veces no son perceptibles para los demás. Por ejemplo, nuestros hijos pueden obsesionarse por el tamaño de su nariz, pero los otros pueden pensar que su tamaño es normal. Algunas partes del cuerpo que tienden a menospreciarse son: cara (especialmente nariz), sonrisa, piel, peso, cabello, pechos, papada, genitales y masa muscular. Este problema se presenta en mujeres y hombres; la mayoría comienza con mayor frecuencia en la adolescencia. Además, existe una obsesión de contemplarse constantemente en diferentes ángulos para verificar su apariencia y provocan una relación de amor-odio con el espejo. El problema más fuerte es que los “pequeños defectos” los magnifican, los miran todo el tiempo y les invade la tristeza por no ser perfectos.
Existe una mayor ansiedad y depresión entre nuestros adolescentes por el gran valor que han depositado en recibir “aprobación” y “likes” a través de sus redes sociales. Están constantemente expuestos a ser evaluados y criticados por sus amigos, compañeros y seguidores. El mayor riesgo es que nunca lograrán cumplir con las expectativas de los demás por la constante comparación y búsqueda de la aceptación de los demás. Los peores enemigos son uno mismo, el espejo y la dependencia obsesiva de la aprobación del mundo.
Afortunadamente hay esperanza y tratamiento para quien sufre dismorfia corporal. Reducir la exposición de redes sociales en nuestros hijos es esencial para evitar que se comparen y busquen desesperadamente la aprobación. Debemos fortalecer su autoestima cambiando sus pensamientos y creencias negativas sobre sí mismos. Y en los casos extremos, debemos recurrir a un terapeuta para que regule y modifique las percepciones negativas de nuestros hijos.
