Entre pitos y flautas el tren Derramadero-Ramos Arizpe

El detonante del desarrollo en México fue, sin duda, el ferrocarril. Su primera línea, primera de América Latina, de poco más de 10 kilómetros, se inauguró en 1850. Durante el porfiriato se tendieron más de 20 mil kilómetros de “caminos de acero” por los que corrían los trenes de carga y pasajeros. Tanto sirvió aquella red ferroviaria al País que la Revolución Mexicana de 1910 se hizo a caballo, a pie y en tren, en el que además de transportar ejércitos, armas y pertrechos, también viajaron las ideas que pretendían instaurar la modernidad y la democracia.
Antes del ferrocarril, en México nadie viajaba sino por obligación o franca necesidad. Los caminos eran difíciles y peligrosos y los medios de transporte eran carretas y carruajes tirados por mulas y caballos. Las máquinas de vapor y la construcción de la red ferroviaria nacional facilitaron los viajes de placer. Desde las últimas décadas del siglo 19, las rutas del Ferrocarril Central Mexicano recorrían las principales ciudades del País y de Estados Unidos. Los trenes de pasajeros llevaban dormitorios, coche comedor, salón fumador, baños, peluquería y un lugar llamado “escritorio”, además de vagones con cómodos sillones giratorios y reclinables para dormitar, conversar, leer periódicos y conocer a otros pasajeros.
Sin embargo, la noble empresa ferroviaria mexicana se comió a sí misma. Nunca se renovó a sí misma ni se modernizó, mientras que en Europa se electrificaban las redes ferroviarias y se utilizaban trenes en los que dominaba la idea de la comodidad y la gran velocidad en competencia con los automóviles y los aviones. Aun así, aquellas máquinas y vagones de Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México, nobles “bestias con alma de acero”, recorrieron una y otra vez por más de una centuria las vías, uniendo los puertos, ciudades, pueblos y rancherías de México hasta que la vejez y el cansancio decidían su destino: el abandono en los tiraderos de viejos patios del ferrocarril y, en el mejor de los casos, los vagones que quedaban varados en tramos de vías inservibles sirvieron para dar techo y abrigo a las familias de los ferrocarrileros y podían verse cerca de las estaciones en todo el territorio mexicano, siempre adornados con floridas macetas de geranios de color de rosa o colorados colgando de sus ventanillas.
Finalmente, después de ser vendida a la iniciativa privada, la red ferroviaria está cumpliendo con el desarrollo en función del comercio con el exterior, y ya no como una vía interna de comunicación. Sus larguísimos trenes de carga se ven a veces parados en las vías cercanas a Derramadero, incluso, también en las vías que todavía corren dentro de la ciudad, provocando serios problemas de tráfico. Todas las noches, los vecinos de estos caminos de hierro deben sufrir la estridencia de los silbatos de los trenes que cruzan la ciudad y no dejan de tocarlos en ninguno de sus tramos.
Pensado desde hace muchos años, el tren de pasajeros Ramos Arizpe-Derramadero es ya absolutamente necesario para la movilidad de los trabajadores a los diversos parques industriales del norte y sur de Saltillo. Entre esta capital y Derramadero, por ejemplo, se mueven diariamente más de 19 mil personas.
El proyecto de este tren sólo ha logrado un cambio de nombre. De llamarlo tren Ramos Arizpe-Saltillo, ahora le llaman el Coahuilteco. Ni pensar siquiera en la posibilidad de su realización, pese a que la utilización de la infraestructura concesionada a las empresas de transportación ferroviaria de la zona bajaría muchísimo su costo en relación con el del tren Maya. Ni pensarlo cuando en tres años el Gobierno Federal ha sido absolutamente incapaz de terminar los pocos kilómetros que faltan de la ampliación a cuatro carriles de la carretera a Derramadero. Pobre Coahuilteco, difícilmente
aterrizará entre los pitos y flautas
del Maya.
