Bach: Evangelio y Música
Pocas obras musicales han despertado tanta admiración y la consecuente veneración como la Pasión según San Mateo (BWV 244) de Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). El hecho conlleva su misterio, su propio encanto y devenir determinante. Se sabe que el propio Bach la estrenó el día de Viernes Santo de 1729, aunque hay datos que afirman que ya se había interpretado dos años antes; no se sabe cuánto tiempo estuvo Bach dedicado a la colosal tarea de tal composición. No podía faltar a esta obra el encanto de la leyenda romántica que rodea, a veces, a las grandes creaciones artísticas. Suele leerse en los libros de historia de la música que el niño genio, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847), rescató la partitura de la Pasión de una casa que alquilaba el carnicero del barrio donde residían los Mendelssohn. Al ver Felix con estupor que el carnicero envolvía los pedazos de carne en papel pautado le preguntó de dónde sacaba esas partituras. Después de explicarle, Mendelssohn acudió con el permiso consabido al inmueble donde encontró y rescató la Pasión según San Mateo, entre otras tantas partituras. La historia de esta colosal obra empezaba a valorarse, ya que, poco tiempo después, Mendelssohn la reestrenaría el 11 de marzo de 1829, casi 80 años después de la muerte del kantor de la iglesia de Santo Tomás de Leipzig y a 100 años de su primera interpretación. El joven Mendelssohn tenía tan solo 20 años.
Para muchos melómanos y especialistas de la música, la Pasión según San Mateo representa no sólo el punto culminante de la música que Bach compuso para su iglesia y su fe, sino también forma parte de ese selecto grupo de composiciones musicales que se consideran un hito: la Misa del Papa Marcelo de Palestrina, el Orfeo de Monteverdi, la Quinta Sinfonía de Beethoven (desde luego la Novena Sinfonía del mismo autor), el Requiem de Mozart, La consagración de la primavera de Stravinski, el Preludio a la siesta de un fauno de Debussy, entre otras obras. La devoción que Bach mostró en el proceso de su creación se puede ver reflejado en la partitura: trabajó con regla y compás, empleó tinta roja para los recitativos del Evangelista, con el propósito de distinguir el mensaje divino del resto del texto. La orquestación es copiosa: emplea dos coros mixtos, dos orquestas, y un grupo adicional de niños cantores; una orquestación poco usual para la época y que nos remite a la Octava Sinfonía de Gustav Mahler, obra que también desafió la estructura convencional del momento.
Bach fue un hombre profundamente religioso, un creyente piadoso, convencido de su fe en Dios, un estudioso avezado no solo de la Biblia sino de los teólogos y exégetas contemporáneos. De él se puede afirmar que cada una de sus obras son una cúspide musical, dotadas cada una de ellas de la inigualable y copiosa imaginación que lo caracterizó. La Pasión según San Mateo reúne en sí toda la sabiduría de este compositor y la unificación de todo el arte sonoro que le antecedió.
