ISIS: el plan para después del califato

ISIS tenía que saber lo que en este momento está ocurriendo; eso al menos indicaría la lógica. Una a una de sus más importantes posesiones han ido cayendo, la última, esta semana. Es muy difícil pensar que los líderes de esta organización no hubiesen calculado lo que significaba desafiar al mismo tiempo a dos gobiernos nacionales, a una cantidad de milicias y actores locales, a un número de potencias regionales entre las que se encuentra Arabia Saudita, Turquía e Irán, y a un número de potencias globales incluyendo a EU, a Rusia y a otras más como Francia o Bélgica. Y se puede acusar de lo que sea a ISIS, menos de tontos. Por consiguiente, del mismo modo como la conquista de una vastísima cantidad de territorio y la posterior fundación del califato o “Estado Islámico”, eran parte del plan, también tendríamos que pensar que el colapso de ese califato estaba ya descontado desde hacía tiempo.
Al margen de concentrarnos en las posiciones que ha perdido esta organización en el último año, y contrastar al ISIS de 2016 con el ISIS de 2014, podríamos cambiar de perspectiva y más bien comparar al ISIS de antes, el de 2012 –cuando esa agrupación comienza a penetrar la guerra civil siria desde Irak– contra el ISIS de hoy, aún si perdiese todas sus conquistas.
Eso que hoy conocemos como ISIS es en realidad un grupo que en su momento fue el componente mayor de Al Qaeda en Irak (AQI), cuyo liderazgo estableció una alianza con algunos exmilitares y exfuncionarios de tiempos de Saddam Hussein. Tras penetrar a territorio sirio, AQI, comandada por Bagdadi, sostuvo una disputa política con la filial de Al Qaeda en Siria, después de la cual sobrevino la ruptura con Al Qaeda y su consecuente enfrentamiento. Tras conquistar una importante cantidad de territorio en Siria, ISIS lanzó su ofensiva mayor en Irak, y fundó su califato. Probablemente, ese mismo plan incluía el tratar de sostener el califato hasta donde fuese posible y posteriormente pasar a una siguiente fase. En otros términos, podríamos suponer, sólo como hipótesis, que la conquista de territorio y el establecimiento del califato eran en realidad un medio para alcanzar lo que ISIS ha alcanzado en estos dos años, para después regresar a ser el tipo de organización que eran antes de 2011, sólo que ahora, con una relevancia mucho mayor.
La fase en la que nos encontramos, entonces, consiste en el martirio, en la continuada comisión de atentados a manos de su matriz, operando cada vez con menos posesiones territoriales en Siria e Irak, a manos de sus filiales, a manos de sus células, o a manos de seguidores actuando en solitario o en pareja (como en Orlando o San Bernardino), atentados no siempre sofisticados, pero sí con una gran maquinaria propagandística que los incluye dentro de una misma lógica narrativa.
Sin embargo, en la misma clave del éxito de ISIS, podría, quizás, radicar su talón de Aquiles. El mensaje contenido en el nombre “Estado Islámico” pierde la materialidad que tenía. El territorio de dicho “estado” (que nunca lo fue), es cada vez menor y va a terminar por desparecer. Ya no habrá cuerpo administrativo. Ya no habrá una moneda circulando. El Califa será sólo califa en el nombre. Y, por lo tanto, el poder material de atracción que tan bien había funcionado, habrá finalmente disminuido. El problema es que, para convertir a esa contranarrativa en un arma contra ISIS, hay que saber cómo penetrar el mundo de la comunicación que hoy esa organización domina, y pelear contra ella ahora en ese territorio no material que tan rápidamente conquistó.
