Indagan ‘endémico’ abuso a menores

LISBOA, PRT.- El director de una comisión de laicos que indaga el abuso sexual contra niños en la Iglesia católica portuguesa dijo ayer en conferencia de prensa que en el pasado era un problema “generalizado” que en ocasiones alcanzó proporciones “verdaderamente endémicas”.
El psiquiatra Pedro Strecht, que dirige el Comité Independiente para el Estudio de Abuso contra Niños en la Iglesia católica, dijo que el grupo ha recopilado una lista de 424 presuntas víctimas. En enero, antes de que iniciara la pesquisa, jerarcas eclesiásticos dijeron que se había producido apenas un puñado de casos.
El panel, creado por la Conferencia Episcopal Portuguesa, indaga presuntos casos de abusos a menores de entre dos y 17 años desde 1950 hasta el presente. Deberá publicar un informe el 31 de enero.
La información obtenida hasta el momento indica que “un número significativo” de sacerdotes presuntamente cometieron abusos sexuales desde 1950, precisó Strecht en una conferencia de prensa en Lisboa. Añadió que “el problema no solamente existía, sino que era generalizado”.
Dijo que al remontarse más atrás en el tiempo, el panel halló “situaciones graves que duraron décadas y en algunos lugares alcanzaron proporciones verdaderamente endémicas”. Las víctimas eran varones en su mayoría , aunque también hubo niñas, precisó.
