“Me gustan los venenos más lentos, las bebidas más amargas, las drogas más potentes, las idea más insanas, los pensamientos más complejos, los sentimientos más fuertes”. Caray, esto si es una apuesta de vida. Se necesitan muchos huevos para escribir y vivir así. Y así lo hizo la autora de estas líneas, la brasileña de origen ucraniano, Clarice Lispector. Sacó adelante a su familia con el único talento a la mano: su escritura. Su pasión era la bebida, el fumar interminables pitillos y escribir. ¿El orden de importancia? Vaya usted a saber lector, lo bien cierto es lo siguiente: un día, la gran Clarice Lispector se acostó briaga en su recámara. El problema fue el llevar también a su cama, un cigarro prendido. El desenlace usted lo sabe: incendió la habitación, su cama y ella misma ardió viva… dormida por la ingesta de alcohol.
Meses, meses duró en rehabilitación en un hospital con severas quemaduras en su cuerpo. Su mano derecha y brazo se vio seriamente afectado. Cayó en una depresión abismal. Aunque siguió escribiendo, ya nada fue igual en su vida atormentada. ¿Cómo mantener la salud mental, cómo me he mantenido medio cuerdo al final de cuentas, luego de meses, infames meses de tener media vida? Si a esto aún se le puede llamar vida. Lo dije en el texto titulado “Elogio del alcohol” del pasado lunes 5 de octubre: le he subido grados a la ingesta de alcohol. Lo repito también: no es un honor ni blasón, pero lo he hecho para no enloquecer.
Digamos, es mi psicólogo de cabecera en días turbulentos. También, un placer el cual espero, no sea vicio. Cuando joven y por dos etapas largas de mi vida (la primera seis o siete meses. La segunda por un año y ocho meses), dejé de beber alcohol por pura vanidad. Solamente para hacerlo. No era obligación ni reto ni promesa. Sólo lo hice. Días de peste y pandemia. ¿Cómo mantener la calma, cómo mantener una sana verticalidad, cómo mantener el equilibrio en nuestra vida mental? Lo anterior bajo el siguiente escenario el cual usted ya lo sabe: estamos arribando al millón de casos confirmados de COVID-19. La suma dicen los especialistas, debe de ser al menos cuatro veces más por un motivo: México en uno de los peores países del mundo en aplicar la prueba. No le invierte a ello. Así es imposible un diagnóstico certero.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador desde el inicio de la peste, no quiso ni ha querido hacer pruebas: la alarma se trocaría en pánico y el país colapsaría. Mejor, nos sume en la ignorancia del abismo. Y este abismo hace estragos en la salud mental de todo mundo. Lo dijo la directora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud, Carissa F. Etienne: “Todos estamos sufriendo…”. Le creo a la directora. Esta ola, esta enorme ola de la problemática COVID-19 (decir post-Covid no embala, aún estamos lejos de ello) donde el amasijo es de miedo, asilamiento, temor al contagio, presión económica, angustia, terror enquistado, etcétera, nos ha orillado a lo siguiente: una de cada tres personas mayores de 18 años, muestra síntomas severos de ansiedad y depresión.

Lo anterior lo dice un estudio reciente de la Universidad Iberoamericana (“Encuesta de seguimiento de los Efectos del COVID-19 en el Bienestar de los Mexicanos”). Usted estimado lector ¿cómo se mantiene vivo, cómo son sus rutinas para escapar al bacilo oriental? ¿Cómo le va todo el día y parte de la noche? ¿Aún duerme bien, o ya no puede pegar el ojo? ¿Tiene ansiedad, tiene insomnio feroz? 9 de cada 10 amigos o conocidos míos, es decir, todo mundo, ya padece la peste del insomnio, para decirlo con los habitantes de Macondo de Gabriel García Márquez. ¿Cómo combatir esta peste? En mi caso, con alcohol. Generosas libaciones de buenos tragos. Pero caray, no todos los días. Ya luego mi disecada panza reclama por ello.
El enorme dramaturgo inglés Tennesse Williams, el cual vivió por etapas de su vida en San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato y frecuentaba el Bar “La cucaracha”, bar el cual aún existe y donde he pasado buenas tardes de tragos cuando he ido, bebía a tal grado para combatir su depresión, rozando no pocas veces el delirio. “Dos whiskys en el bar, tres tragos por la mañana, un daiquirí en otro bar, tres copas de vino en el almuerzo y tres en la cena; dos tranquilizantes, tres pastillas de color verde y otra amarilla que no recuerdo el nombre…”. Esta y no otra era la dieta de Tennesse Williams.
Carissa F. Etienne, de la OPS, lo ha alertado una y otra vez: “Los servicios de salud mental y violencia doméstica son esenciales y debemos enfocarnos en abordar las brechas que la pandemia ha dejado al descubierto… nadie debería de sufrir solo y sin apoyo profesional… un tercio de los pacientes que se recuperan de COVID-19 pueden tener cambios duraderos en su estado de ánimo y sufren de ansiedad y depresión”. Fotografía aterradora, sin duda. Insisto, ¿cómo combate usted lo anterior? ¿Cuál es su receta? No le estoy instando a seguir mis desordenados pasos, no. Absolutamente no. Sólo le cuento de mi apuesta por estos días lo cual me ha servido para soportar la peste bíblica la cual nos asiste.
Cinco de siete u ocho Premios Nobel de literatura norteamericanos, fueron borrachos de armas tomar, de filo portentoso. Mire si no usted la lista: Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Eugene O’Neill y John Steinbeck. También le repito lo siguiente: letras y alcohol contra lo afirmado por mucha gente, son vicios excluyentes. Son líneas paralelas las cuales jamás se cruzan en mi caso. Siempre he escrito sobrio, necesito de todas mis neuronas para escribir algo digno de su lectura. Con el alcohol se escriben líneas en el viento. Allí se quedan. La escritura seria se deletrea en el granito de estas páginas.
