Oficio que abraza el papel y la tinta
El Manual de la Tipografía Española define como tipografista al que hace experimentos o busca perfeccionar el arte de la imprenta, y al tipógrafo el que ejerce la ciencia o el arte de la imprenta. El invento de Gutenberg cambió por completo la cultura occidental y más tarde lo haría con la propia historia del mundo.
La imprenta en la edad media desató una revolución: los libros pudieron reproducirse con rapidez y en grandes cantidades.
LA PRIMERA IMPRENTA DEL CONTINENTE AMERICANO, 1540
Fray Juan de Zumárraga y el Virrey Antonio de Mendoza realizaron gestiones para que la Nueva España contara con una imprenta, la concesión fue para el alemán Juan Cronenberg, quien radicaba en Sevilla, obtuvo el privilegio exclusivo de la primera imprenta en México y traer consigo ejemplares de libros. El alemán designó al italiano Juan Pablos, Giovanni Paoli, para que operara la imprenta en México, ambos signaron un contrato donde se estipulaba que Juan Pablos recibiría una quinta parte de las ganancias.
SALTILLO, 1822
Gracias a gestiones hechas por el diputado Miguel Ramos Arizpe, se instaló la primera imprenta en Saltillo, la cual duró poco tiempo, pero sentó las bases para que años más tarde, 1827, el Gobierno del Estado de Coahuila y Texas adquiriera la propia, esto propició el crecimiento de impresores y talleres tipográficos en la ciudad.

Después de la llegada de la imprenta a la ciudad, encontramos una larga lista de publicaciones periódicas, así como los impresores responsables: La Gaceta Constitucional de Coahuila y Texas, editada por Samuel Bangs en 1827, El Voto de Coahuila, El Republicano, periódicos oficiales del Gobierno de Coahuila aparecidos de 1840 a 1845, El Heraldo editado por Isidro Vega, 1848, luego por José María de la Fuente en 1850, otros títulos fueron La Patria 1852 y La Nueva Patria 1855, La República 1860, El Termómetro 1861. En 1866 se publicó El Coahuilense, órgano oficial del Gobierno del Estado.
Las publicaciones independientes se hicieron presentes con el periódico semi burlesco y político llamado La Linterna de Diógenes de Francisco de la Fuente, La Paz de Jesús Montes, Don Martín Terrones elaborado por José M. Morales, La Penumbra de Constantino de la Garza, El Martes, periódico sin subvención y sin aspiraciones a ella del redactor y editor José Juan S. Sanchez, así como el semanario independiente de literatura mejoras públicas, noticias variedades y anuncios llamado, La Ciudad de Saltillo también de Sánchez Uresti.
El Cronista de Coahuila y La Libertad Civil de José M. Cárdenas, El Fénix, El Ciudadano Coahuilense y El Heraldo Mexicaano de Severo Fernández, y otros tantos como El Sufragio Libre de Luis García de Letona, El Libre Examen de Jacobo M. Aguirre, el periódico católico El Aldeano de J. E. Lopez Aguirre.
LOS TALLERES
Una de las primeras imprentas independientes que existió en la ciudad fue la de don Serapio Fragoso Gutiérrez, llamada Imprenta Libre, que se ubicó por la calle de Morelos, tiempo más tarde su hijo Francisco continuaría la larga tradición de buenos impresores; entre las publicaciones hechas en este taller destaca La Revista, de contenido científico y cultural hecha al alimón por Francisco Fuentes Fragoso y José García Rodríguez y el periódico bisemanal El Siglo XX.
En 1880 el impresor Simón de la Peña, abrió en un local de la calle de Aldama una moderna imprenta llamada La Perla Fronteriza, en 1899 el taller fue adquirido por la Compañía Industrial de Artes Gráficas y en 1902 pasó a manos del español Francisco Voladeras, en tiempos de la Revolución Mexicana Voladeras regresó a España y como propietario quedó el señor Juan de los Santos, quien empezó como aprendiz en el mismo taller, este negocio, ahora papelería es uno de los más antiguos que existen en la ciudad. Otro fue el de don Severo Fernández llamado El Golfo de México, el cual se ubicaba en la antigua calle Galeana # 10 hoy Aldama.
Existieron hasta principios del siglo 20 otros talleres de imprenta como la de un Eugenio Fernández Valente Flores y sus hijos Francisco y Gonzalo, Ignacio C. Peña, la Imprenta religiosa del presbítero Mariano Cárdenas.
LA PROLIFERACIÓN
La primera máquina de linotipo llegó a Saltillo en 1916, la trajo el gobernador Gustavo Espinosa, este colosal artefacto de complicada operación sirvió para echar a andar el periódico La Reforma.
Después de La Revolución Mexicana nacieron varios talleres de imprenta, como el de Humberto Castilla Salas, Froylán Mier Narro, quien además publicaba sus propios trabajos literarios, otros importantes fueron los de Eugenio Fernández, Manuel García y Carlos Ribé.
LO QUE EL TIEMPO BORRÓ
Las nuevas tecnologías han apagado por completo los ruidos de las incansables máquinas de plato Chadler, también hicieron que los linotipos fueran a dar como fierro viejo a la chatarra. El agradable e inigualable olor a tinta, cambió por el desagradable de la impresión digital.
