Halloween... ¿Qué significa y cuál es su misterioso origen?

La fiesta de Halloween o ‘noche de brujas’ se ha convertido en una conocida fiesta estadounidense que cada año gana más adeptos en todo el mundo
La mezcla de fiestas, sustos, bromas y caramelos dista mucho de los antiguos orígenes de Halloween.
Durante siglos, esta misteriosa noche ha experimentado muchos cambios derivados de la mezcla de las tradiciones y las culturas de los países occidentales, que hacen de la Noche de las Brujas una celebración muy especial llena de tradiciones que han ido transformándose fruto de su historia.
Orígenes de Halloween
Los orígenes de Halloween se remontan a hace más de 3 mil años, según la Universidad de Oxford, cuando los pueblos celtas de Europa celebraban su año nuevo, llamado Samhain, en el que hoy consideramos el día 1 de noviembre.
La víspera de este festival de la cosecha gaélico, Samhain —lo que nosotros conocemos como Halloween— se creía que los espíritus caminaban por la Tierra mientras viajaban al más allá, junto con otras criaturas, como hadas y demonios. Este ritual servía para despedir a Lugh, el dios del Sol, y dar la bienvenida a las noches cortas y frías que traía consigo el otoño.

Los ritos sagrados celebrados tenían en sus orígenes un carácter purificador y religioso entre los que estaba la comunicación con los muertos, a los que se les ayudaba a encontrar su camino colocando velas encendidas en las ventanas.
Cuando llegó la ocupación romana a tierras celtas la festividad se mezcló con las propias de los invasores como la “fiesta de la cosecha”, celebrada en honor a la diosa Pomona.
Los papas Gregorio III Y Gregorio IV trataron de suplantar Halloween por la fiesta católica del Día de Todos los Santos que fue trasladada del 13 de mayo al 1 de noviembre.
Expansión a Estados Unidos
La festividad de Halloween llega a Estados Unidos y Canadá en el año 1840 a través de los inmigrantes irlandeses pero no empezó a celebrarse masivamente hasta el año 1921, fecha en la que se celebró el primer desfile de Halloween en Minnesota.
Durante las décadas siguiente la fiesta fue adquiriendo popularidad hasta que en 1970 se produjo su internalización gracias a las series de televisión y al cine. En 1978 se estrenaba “Halloween”, el film de terror de John Carpenter.
¿En qué países se celebra actualmente?
Halloween se celebra la noche del 31 de octubre principalmente en el mundo anglosajón: Estados Unidos, Canadá, Irlanda y Reino Unido, con la excepción de Australia y Nueva Zelanda donde la tradición no está tan arraigada.
Es una de las noches más importantes para los estadounidenses y canadienses cuyos niños salen a las calles disfrazados de fantasmas, duendes y demonios, para pedir dulces y golosinas a sus vecinos.
En España y América Latina, en general, esta celebración se considera una fiesta estadounidense, pero existen tradiciones y celebraciones ese mismo día con idéntico significado de cercanía con el mundo de los muertos.
En nuestro país y debido a su origen celta existen un gran número de tradiciones que se relacionan con los espíritus como son las meigas y la Santa Compaña de Galicia. Ya en el siglo XVIII en Asturias los niños pedían comida en las puertas de las casas durante esa noche portando lámaparas en sus manos.
En numerosos municipios de Castilla las casas eran decoradas con calabazas a las que le hacían agujeros en su interior para simular una cara, después se introducía dentro de la misma una vela o luz para invocar a los buenos espíritus y asustar a la gente en esa atmósfera de terror.
