Al final del camino la congruencia, el incansable trabajo, el amor por la vocación, la determinación y la voluntad siempre ganan

Tal vez pocos sepan la identidad de Tom Monaghan; pero sin duda quienes la ignoran han probado alguno de sus productos o, en todo caso, han oído hablar de su empresa.
Este hombre es el creador de un icono globalmente conocido, me refiero a “Domino’s Pizza”, empresa que este año cumplió 60 años.
Su biografía demuestra lo que una persona, independientemente de su origen, puede alcanzar con el poder de sus sueños, con esa fuerza inmaterial que guarda el coraje y la inquebrantable voluntad de convertir un frágil sueño en una contundente realidad. Así es, Tom, a pesar de tener todo en contra, pudo demostrar que cuando se quiere, se puede.
Tom nació el 25 de marzo de 1937, en Ann Arbor, Michigan, Estados Unidos. Muy pronto, a los cuatro años de edad, quedó huérfano de padre. Ante las dificultades económicas, su madre fue incapaz de mantener a la familia, esta situación la obligó a enviar a Tom y a su otro hijo, James, a vivir en diversas casas hogar, hasta llegar a un orfanato dirigido por monjas polacas.
Tom fue un estudiante mediocre; de hecho, fue el número 44 de su clase: el último lugar. Salió de la primaria de milagro, gracias al apoyo de una monja.
Trabajó en granjas, apaleó heno, ordeñó vacas y entregó periódicos. Su juventud fue infeliz, la cual llenó con interminables horas de lectura.
La decisión
Fue después de una conversación que sostuvo con su hermano James que la vida de Tom tomaría un rumbo insospechado:
James estaba interesado en comprar un negocio de pizza llamado DomiNick’s ubicado en Ypsilanti, Michigan, que le vendían en 900 dólares.
Sin embargo, James tenía miedo de operar el negocio por cuenta propia, por lo cual decidió invitar a su hermano.
La invitación puso a Tom en una encrucijada: al no tener dinero estaba realmente en una situación precaria para autoemplearse. Sin embrago, tomó una decisión que, sin saberlo, sería las más trascendental de su vida: aceptar la propuesta de James.
Los hermanos, gracias a un préstamo bancario y después de recibir una lección de 15 minutos sobre la producción de pizzas, iniciaron su negocio.
Posteriormente, en 1961, Tom cambia su Volkswagen 1959, su “escarabajo”, por el control total del negocio. Así nace la historia.
En 1964, renombró su negocio como “Domino’s Pizza”, debido a que el antiguo propietario de DomiNick’s quería recuperar la marca.
En 1967, empezó a crecer a través de desarrollar franquicias en todos los Estados Unidos. Posteriormente, en 1983, inició la internacionalización. Hoy existen más 17 mil sucursales dando trabajo a casi 300 mil personas en 5 mil 700 ciudades de 73 países.
Consumado creador
Tom inventó un nuevo sector industrial: la entrega a domicilio gratis junto con una idea genial, misma que introdujo en 1973, “30 minutos o pizza gratis”.
Indudablemente, la fundación y el desarrollo de la afamada multinacional es una de las clásicas historias de la manera en que un “selfmade man” (un hombre que se hace a sí mismo) es capaz de crear un imperio empresarial desde la nada: sólo basta decir que Tom inició el negocio a los 23 años, creciendo de estudios universitarios y sin tener alguna experiencia en negocios.
Las lecciones
de Monaghan
Tom es un ferviente católico que siguió su propio camino con base en el esfuerzo, la tenacidad y la honradez. Logró lo imposible transformando en su religión las siguientes reglas:
Regla #1: ‘TÚ puedes lograr todo lo que
te propongas’
Tom siempre ha creído que cada persona tiene una misión en la vida, que la puede realizar si pone todo su corazón y esfuerzo en lograr esos ideales.
Así pudo sobreponerse a sus “tragedias” tanto personales como del negocio para salir adelante. Las mismas monjas que lo educaron sabían que, a pesar de ser un mal estudiante, su coraje y determinación lo harían salir adelante pese a que nadie más creyera en él.
La madre Berada fue su guía, así que siempre trató de seguir su consejo: “sé un buen chico”. Ella fue su inspiración, ella fue la que le enseñó que podría salir adelante si tenía la suficiente fe y la confianza en sí mismo.
Esta fuerza fue la que requirió para triunfar a pesar que, en un momento determinado, los bancos tomaron el 51 por ciento del control de sus negocios debido a problemas financieros. Nunca se dio por vencido, inclusive, al no poder pagar un abogado, el mismo defendió su negocio ante el embate de los bancos... ¡con éxito!
Así que “no importa lo que decidas ser, el trabajo duro y la determinación son la esencia para tener éxito en un mundo tan competitivo”.
Regla #2: jamás sueñes CON ser bueno, sueña
CON ser el mejor
en lo que haces
Tom aprendió de biografías de grandes hombres esta regla. Sabía las razones del éxito de Abraham Lincoln, de la manera en que el niño pobre de Illinois se superó a sí mismo hasta llegar a ser el mejor.
Sabía que “lo bueno” era el peor enemigo de “lo mejor”, precisamente por las zonas de comodidad que genera la complacencia. Así que más vale que eso que emprendan y decidan hacer en sus vidas, tenga la premisa de convertirse en el “referente” de su categoría.
Regla #3: Toma el
riesgo y sé el primero
No siempre se sabe lo que se esta haciendo; por tanto hay que saber tomar riesgos, explorar sin temor a ideas nuevas, a cambiar de paradigmas.
Ciertamente, cuando Tom inició su negocio había grandes compañías haciendo lo mismo, pero él tuvo el valor de inventar maneras de producir y comercializar las pizzas, satisfaciendo lo que todos necesitaban, pero que nadie previamente había visto. La suerte esta del lado de quien la trabaja.
Por tanto, hay que tener presente que el fracaso es un subproducto del éxito.
Regla #4: Que sea
tu motivación el amor, no el dinero
Indudablemente, mucha gente trabaja por el dinero, pero la regla debería ser otra: pasión por el oficio, por trabajar la vocación personal. El dinero es una consecuencia del amor que una persona le pone a su trabajo. Entonces hay que hacer lo que se ama o bien aprender a amar lo que se hace.
Hoy Tom es uno de los filántropos mas notables del mundo.
Regla #5: pueden ir
de la mano principios (religión) y negocios
No importa lo que se haga, siempre se debe tener prioridades en la vida: salud mental y física, relaciones sociales generadoras de abundancia, cuidar del espíritu y contar con un trabajo honesto que permita llevar una vida decente. Lo que implica ser practicante de una religión que permita a la persona buscar lo trascendental. En su caso el ser un católico congruente se convirtió en su principal prioridad.
Lo que cambió su vida
Aún cuando siempre fue un ferviente católico, en 1989 Monagham tuvo un cambio espiritual luego de leer el libro “Mero Cristianismo” de C.S. Lewis, y después de reflexionar sobre su vida, trabajo y religión, en 1998 tomó la decisión de vender el 93 por ciento de la empresa por un monto de mil millones de dólares.
A partir de ese momento se dedicó a desarrollar el proyecto inmobiliario “Ave María Town” en Florida, Estados Unidos, el cual cuenta con un colegio, una universidad, un centro comercial, cancha de golf y tenis, oficinas, farmacia y una inmensa iglesia.
El objetivo de Tom, a sus 84 años, es acercar a Cristo al mundo. Indudablemente, la vida de este formidable emprendedor representa una biografía que pareciera inverosímil, imaginaria, pero es real y demuestra que, durante y al final del camino, la congruencia, el incansable trabajo, el amor por la vocación, la determinación y la voluntad siempre ganan.
Tom es un ejemplo de vida para los jóvenes que se han propuesto vivir una existencia significativa, renunciando a todo por seguir su vocación. Su llamado.
