Un Pancho y varias toñas

Famoso borrachín era el tal Pancho. Sus embriagueces no tenían fin. Sin embargo él afirmaba que se había emborrachado nomás una vez, cuando tenía 18 años. Pero aclaraba que esa “peda” -así decía- era la misma que traía ahora, a los 40.
Cae que no cae iba Pancho todos los días desde la cantina “Lontananza”, en la calle de Ramos Arizpe, al “Salón Cuauhtémoc”, por Allende casi Juárez, y luego al “Jockey Club”, frente a la Plaza de Armas. Remataba su cotidiana peregrinación etílica en “los Bajos”, famosa cantina que estaba en el Hotel Coahuila. De ahí ya no podía salir a causa de la empinadísima escalera, que a esas alturas -o bajuras- se le hacía más difícil de escalar que el Everest.

Jamás traía dinero Pancho, pero bebía de todo. Y es que a unos les caía en gracia, a otros les inspiraba lástima, y todos lo apreciaban bien. El caso es que no le faltaba nunca quien le invitara “la otra”. En la peor de las desdichas, cuando no hallaba a nadie que le pagara la copa, los cantineros le obsequiaban las “toñas”, infame bebistrajo que resultaba de vaciar en un recipiente lo que iba quedando en las copas que no bebían completas los otros parroquianos. En ese inmundo pote se revolvían sobras de tequila y ron, de cerveza, brandy, aguardiente, ginebra y mezcal. Ahí caía de todo, y todo se lo tomaba Pancho sin asco ni disgusto.
A cierto misionero norteamericano le dio por redimir al pobre Pancho. Se apesadumbraba el buen predicador de verlo ir por las calles midiendo paredes, como solían decir los saltillenses al hablar de los borrachos que en las paredes se iban deteniendo para no caer, de modo que parecía que las iban midiendo a brazadas. Le dolía al piadoso yanqui ver a aquel hombre sin ventura perdido en los humos de su borrachera, inútil para todo lo que no fuera buscar las copas con que saciaba su insaciable sed.
Una vez el americano se enteró de que Pancho, que hacía un rato le había pedido unas monedas “para comida”, con la promesa firme de que no las gastaría en beber, se había ido en derechura a una cantina. No tuvo empacho el misionero en entrar a aquel lugar de vicio, pensando que ahí hallaría ocasión de ejercitar su caritativo ministerio. Halló a Pancho en compañía de otros briagos a quienes jubilosamente había invitado con el dinero recibido del norteamericano. “A cuenta de lo que los gringos nos robaron”, les dijo a sus contlapaches el beodo.
-Pero hombre, señor Pancho -le dijo el misionero después de exhortarlo inútilmente a salir de la taberna-. ¿No sabe usté que el vino es muy malo? Apenas ayer leí yo en la revista “Atalaya” que cada año mueren 50 mil americanos víctimas del alcohol.
-Pos eso allá los gringos -replicó Pancho-. ¡Yo soy puro mexicano!
Salió el misionero meneando tristemente la cabeza. Al salir oyó que en la radiola comenzaban a sonar los acordes de la sentida canción “Amor perdido”. También escuchó un grito de borracho que proclamaba a voz en cuello:
-¡Viva México, cabrones!
