Un par de cheves

Sabio maestro era éste. Enseñaba Física, pero enseñaba más acerca de la vida. Un día llegó a su clase llevando una jarra de cristal y varias bolsas de papel de estraza. Ante la curiosidad del grupo colocó sobre su escritorio aquella jarra que nada contenía.
-Esta jarra -preguntó al grupo- ¿está llena o está vacía?
-Está vacía -respondieron sin vacilar los estudiantes.
Tomó en seguida el profesor una de las bolsas que llevaba. En ella traía varias pelotas de ping-pong. Llenó con ellas la jarra, y preguntó:
-Ahora la jarra ¿está llena o vacía?
-Está llena -contestaron los alumnos.

-Vamos a ver -dijo el maestro. Así diciendo tomó otra bolsa en la cual llevaba pequeñas piedrecillas, y la vació en la jarra. Las piedrecillas ocuparon los espacios que había entre las pelotitas de ping-pong.
-Parece ser que ahora sí la jarra está llena ¿no?
Los alumnos asintieron
-Veamos -dijo el profesor-. Tomó otra de las bolsitas que llevaba. En ella traía arena que echó en la jarra. El fino polvo llenó los espacios que los guijarros dejaban entre sí. Apretó bien la arena el profesor con la palma de su mano, de modo que resultaba ya imposible que dentro de la jarra quedara algún espacio libre.
-¿Está por fin llena la jarra? -preguntó.
-Por fin quedó llena -respondieron los alumnos.
Ante la sorpresa de todos, el maestro sacó de la última bolsa que llevaba un par de latas de cerveza. Las abrió y las vació en la jarra. La arena absorbió todo el líquido. Los estudiantes rieron, divertidos. -
Ahora -dijo el profesor- voy a explicarles el sentido de esta demostración. La jarra representa nuestra vida. Las pelotitas de ping-pong simbolizan lo más importante y grande que hay en la vida de cada uno: su esposa, sus hijos, sus padres y hermanos, sus amigos, su salud... Todo, en fin, lo que constituye lo esencial de nuestra vida, y que la llena aunque falte todo lo demás. Las piedras pequeñas representan las cosas que sirven para hacer más cómoda la vida, pero que no son esenciales: la casa en que vivimos, el automóvil que usamos, el trabajo que tenemos... Son muy necesarias esas cosas, pero no tienen la importancia capital de las primeras. Finalmente está la arenilla que eché al último. En ella están simbolizadas las cosas que podemos llamar superfluas: ver la tele, ir al cine o al futbol, nuestros palos de golf, los viajes a Las Vegas... Todo eso que nos divierte y nos distrae, pero de lo cual podemos prescindir.

-Si con esa arenilla -prosiguió el profesor-, es decir con las cosas superfluas, hubiéramos llenado la jarra en un principio, no habría quedado sitio para las cosas más importantes y las esenciales. Lo mismo sucede con la vida. No debemos llenarla toda con cosas que a fin de cuentas no son indispensables. Ustedes hagan lo que verdaderamente importa para su felicidad. Amen a su mujer. Jueguen con sus hijos. Correspondan a lo que sus padres hicieron por ustedes. Cuiden su salud. Vean a sus amigos... Eso no quiere decir que no se diviertan. Pero cuiden sus prioridades.
-Maestro -preguntó un alumno-. ¿Y qué significan las latas de cerveza?
-Se me habían olvidado -sonrió el maestro-. Las latas de cerveza significan que aunque tu vida esté completamente llena siempre habrá espacio para un par de cheves.
