EU analiza 109 casos de la misteriosa hepatitis infantil

Funcionarios de salud de Estados Unidos están analizando más de un centenar de posibles casos de una misteriosa y severa enfermedad hepática en niños, incluyendo cinco muertes.
Alrededor de dos docenas de estados han reportado casos sospechosos después de que los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) realizaran un llamado a los médicos para que estuvieran aletas a inesperados casos de hepatitis. Los casos datan desde finales de octubre en niños de menos de 10 años. Hasta ahora, sólo se han confirmado nueve casos, en Alabama.
“Estamos lanzando una amplia red para expandir nuestro entendimiento″, aseveró el doctor Jay Butler de los CDC.
No está claro qué es lo que ocasiona la enfermedad. En la mitad de los niños se detectó adenovirus, “pero no sabemos si es la causa”, precisó Butler.

Hay docenas de adenovirus, muchos de ellos asociados con síntomas similares a los de un resfriado, fiebre, dolor de garganta y conjuntivitis. Sin embargo, algunas variantes pueden provocar otros problemas, como inflamación del estómago e intestinos. Los funcionarios están estudiando un vínculo en una variante en particular que suele asociarse con inflamación intestinal.
Por otra parte, funcionarios de salud federales hasta ahora no han encontrado evidencia de que exista una ola inusualmente grande de infecciones de adenovirus, aunque por lo general muchos médicos no realizan pruebas para detectarlas.

Por otra parte, funcionarios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud informaron que tenían reportes de casi 300 casos probables en 20 países.
Mientras que Estados Unidos, la mayoría de los casos son en niños pequeños, casi todos fueron hospitalizados y ocho han recibido trasplantes de hígado.
“Sigue siendo un acontecimiento muy inusual”, precisó Butler. “Una gran parte de estos casos se ha recuperado”, añadió.

El casos de esta misteriosa enfermedad hepática iniciaron en noviembre, después de que funcionarios de salud de Alabama comenzaron a analizar los primeros nueve casos de hepatitis severa en niños de ese estado. Ninguno dio de ellos positivo para los virus que suelen causar hepatitis. Sin embargo, las pruebas dieron positivo para adenovirus.
En este sentido, Butler indicó que ninguno de los menores de Alabama estaba vacunado contra el COVID-19, así que eso ha sido descartado como causa probable, “y esperamos que esta información ayude a clarificar algunas de las especulaciones que circulan en línea”.
Los síntomas de hepatitis o inflamación del hígado son: fiebre, fatiga, pérdida de apetito, náusea, vómito, dolor abdominal, orina oscura, heces claras, dolor en articulaciones e ictericia.
Además de Alabama, los estados que reportaron casos sospechosos son California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Luisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Carolina del Norte, Dakota del Norte, Nebraska, Nueva York, Ohio, Pensilvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington y Wisconsin. Puerto Rico también reportó al menos un caso.
